“We all have a hunger” - Florence and the Machine

WHEN I MET MONKEY I described her as a mean, scheming little gremlin. She had revealed herself right away as the bully of the group, the cat who would eat her tood tastest and then sneak up on the other cats to steal theirs. The cat who would smack anyone that got in her way.
Monkey, I was always saying, chastising her. Let the other cats eat.
Monkey was a skinny little calico with a head that seemed too small for her body. She was standoffish, prone to biting if I tried to touch her, but she never ran away from me. She always wanted food.
She had big goblin eyes and a tendency to narrow them, to squint up at me in a way that made it look like she was smirking. She was so brash about it, the way shed walk up to another cat and smack them, claws out, until they ran away. The way she'd eat all their food, a low growl keeping the other cats away as she ate, and then sit there. Smirking.

I mentioned it to my therapist with a sense of shame. I don't know how to explain it, I told her, except that I need all of it.

We were meeting over Zoom and her face kept freezing on-screen.

You're resource guarding, she told me. Like a dog.

It was what Monkey was doing, too: the low growl she let out as she are, the claws that came out if anyone got near her. It looked like aggression, but it was a message: Please don't take this from me. I need this. Please.
Sometimes I would look out the window and see Monkey sniffing around the yard at rocks and plants, checking every single thing to see if it was edible.

I talked in therapy about my sense that something was wrong with me, that I was fundamentally flawed on some essential, unfix-able level. Sometimes I felt like I wasn't capable of being good in the way that other people were. It was baffling to me, how easily a coworker could offer me the last cookie at lunchtime without feeling like she had to keep it for herself. Sometimes I would collect Post-it notes and water bottles and bowls from the break room, any snacks that were left out, and hide them in my desk. I'd lie if anyone asked if I had them. I told myself that was just my personality: a little self-ish, a little prone to bending the truth.

When did people get so rude? they would say. Why do people have to steal?

Eventually I learned that my therapist had worked as a dog groomer at some point all her talk of resource guarding, everything she knew about animal behavior. For a while it had offended me, how often she compared me to a dog. Every behavior serves a purpose, she would say. She meant that an animal is never acting out just for fun, never being bad just for the sake of it. Animals don't know bad, shed say.

She meant that all the things that look like aggression or meanness are just messages communicating fear or anxiety or hunger or pain. I would tell her about Monkey, how she had started to relax around the other cats, and my therapist would stare at me through the screen in the way that meant she wanted me to figure something out for myself without her having to say it.

Do you think...? she would prompt me, and I would stare dumbly back at her, thinking only about Monkey and hunger and the price of cat food. Do you think that if you had the security of knowing you would always be fed, and you would always have shelter, and you didn't have to worry about these basic parts of survival..?

I finished for her: I would be different.

MONKEY TURNED OUT TO BE a weird, goofy little cat. After months of regular meals, she started climbing trees and smirking down at me from the tallest branches. She started waiting outside my door for artention, waiting to see which toy I would bring her. Her favorite thing was rolling in the dirt, and she would do it over and over

The people who flipped us off, the people who said Fuck you.

The people who were rude and arguing, stealing from the corner store, running from the cops. I wondered what they would be like if they had everything they needed. The promise of it: that they would never be without.

Sometimes at work I tried to tell people about Monkey, but it mostly seemed to make me sound insane. This cat is nice now! I was always saying, like it meant something. I was practicing my own niceness, trying to keep my cabinets stocked, inventorying the snacks I kept stashed in my desk. Trying to keep the cats fed. Trying to share cookies when I could. Wondering what I could be like.
