E. shrugged without looking up, intertwined with A.’s thin body on the blanket that barely kept away the former bathroom’s cold tiles. “Let it be, we’ll check why later,” Ethanael said. “Has the A. one kicked the bucket by now? Whatever’s even hit her.” “Ethanael, don’t,” Dad said. Or Ludovic, or whatever she might call him now. “E.?” Steicy knelt closer, kneading her dark hands like she was unsure whether to reach out. “How is A.? She might not make it. You have to watch out when she’ll—” White noise drowned E.’s ears. But there, A. was still warm, her ribs softly moving in her hold! “No,” E. croaked. “Daughter,” Dad simply said. “Marcus is fucking gone too,” the bald mage kneeling in the corner said. “Just how it goes.” “Onyx, how are you?” Steicy asked. “I sense you’re struggling.” “Won’t die, no worries,” Onyx said, their pained tone slightly defying their words. They sat upright, but their eyes were dark, sad, broken. Today, that felt like a mirror. E.’s sight blurred while she tried not to cry. You weren’t kidnapped, stuck in there. Onyx had been, and he also had. “I’m coming over,” Dad said. In between them were piles of paper, clothes, broken dishes, and Dad seemed to carefully pick his steps along. This place was an abandoned dump left from a different time. E. scanned him, his round glasses not unlike her own.
