1. That heat. That damned heat. It’s only nine in the morning and it’s already ninety in the shade. I drag the rocking chair out of the sun and sit on the faded cushion as the patrol car speeds along the dirt road, dust pluming, the desert heat turning the horizon into a shimmering mirror.
