The winter Jungyo reached Itoshima, Fukuoka. Yokozuna Hoshoryu had 23 bouts, starting with Gonoyama, who claimed victory by pushing him out. Hoshoryu suffered 8 early losses but rebounded with a 6 win streak, showing great skill and determination. Yoshinofuji went 3-5, losing thrice to Hoshoryu.
