Railway Route Controller, trying to run a patch of railway across the North and North East. Sometimes I succeed.

Likes trains, which is probably just as well.
Every now and then, I wish I didn't like trains so much.

What. A. Shift. 😫

That wish never lasts long, mind...

Have a train.

Yes, I can be a pernickety bugger, but I don't think I'm being unreasonable in thinking that whether one of its regions does or does not still have sections of line controlled by semaphore signalling is the sort of thing that Network Rail probably *should* know?

Meanwhile, in local Faceache groups...

I think quite a few women have pulled off Bond.

Seems legit.

Looking to form a heavy metal band?

Not sure of a name?

Just listen to Radio 4's Farming Today!

I bagsy 'Pig Unit' and 'BSE Explosion', coming to an edition of NME near you...

East Cowton can't fail if East Cowton doesn't exist. 😁

I have a reputation for breaking things, but the power to make railways disappear just by hovering my mouse cursor over them is a new power that I'm not sure I deserve. 😂

Really, really not feeling life tonight. 😐

Time for some good '90s playlist and, hopefully, a decent sleep.

🎶 But we're traaaash, you and me
We're the litter on the breeze
We're the lovers on the streets
Just traaaaash, me and you
It's in everything we do
It's in everything we do 🎵

Have a train.

Happy birthday to my favourite method of transport, the means of earning my salary and my unwavering lifelong passion.

Have a train.

This is the sort of 'Breaking News' I can thoroughly get on board with. 😀

Anyway, there we are.

After five countries (six if you count Belgium, and I'm going to, because nobody else does. Poor Belgium) and precisely 2507 rail miles, it's time to round off my travels with a pint in my happy place.

I can think of far worse ways to spend a week.

Hurrah.

Back in the UK, and I felt it'd be unseemly not to partake of @lner.co.uk's new menu.

Take it from me - the steak bavette is *gorgeous*. 😀

If you get a chance to enjoy 'steaks on a train', do!

And there we are...

Until about two hours ago, I was heading back to the UK via the 13:10 Thalys to Paris and thence to St P. However, the weather's dismal and the trains are busy and, well, I'm worn out.

Bagged myself passage instead on the 13:40 direct from Amsterdam.

Back at Amersfoort, just in time for the next loco-hauled International into Amsterdam. What're the odds, eh? 😉

Let's have some more love for the Koplopers. Memories of 1990s Hoek-Amsterdam Boat Trains abound. 🚢 🚂

Utrecht. It's been a while. Station's changed a bit...
September 17, 2025 at 10:52 AM
In Amsterdam, I noticed a shiny new ICE 3neo on the next platform. Decided it would be rude not to take it to Utrecht.

Packed full of Brits and Americans - serving as a reminder of homeward travels today. I love this interior, though. Classy.
September 17, 2025 at 10:52 AM
Something else from the 'soon-to-be-no-more' pile - the NS Vectrons disappear from the Internationals in November. Conventional ICEs will replace them, pending the eventual arrival of the Talgo sets.

I'm taking this to Amsterdam.
September 17, 2025 at 8:09 AM
Ahh, the Koplopers. Another childhood favourite. 😀

To Hilversum in one of these funky compartments (only the Dutch could pull off red leather), then back to Amersfoort for a bit of loco haulage...
September 17, 2025 at 8:09 AM
Yup! FC compartments are, for now at least, still relatively common over here. DB, ÖBB and NS all have them as an option, though I'd say only DB will within a few years (and only then on older ICEs - I did one of those but wasn't able to get a good interior shot, too busy).

Amersfoort, and look what's out to play!

The Mat' 64 'Apekops' were withdrawn by 2016, but Arriva have hired this 1974-vintage example to run a couple of morning peak services to Barneveld and back.

I loved these units as a kid - I'm ridiculously chuffed to be on one again!
