Our friend was forced to leave town today. He was not permitted to bid farewell. As he was loaded onto the jail bus in shackles to meet a midday flight to Anchorage, his children watched in tears from across the street. They had no goodbye hug. Their Dad was gone.

He had a DUI conviction a few years ago - no injuries and no property damage but he did drive drunk. His wife went to see him with their small children but ICE did not allow visitors or phone calls. His boss and his lawyer tried to get him out on bail but were rebuffed.

From my wife, who is a citizen of Guatemala and USA. We live in Bethel in bush Alaska.

ICE came to Bethel, Alaska, this week and they rounded up Koreans and Guatemalans. Someone we know who came from Guatemala more than two decades ago was arrested.
