The Lesser Ground Cuckoo.

Rarely seen in the open, but it’s loud song carries and sounds like a referee’s whistle being blown faster and then slower.
Likes brushy dry woodland in tropical lowlands, where most of the time it walks stealthily on the ground.

The Golden Browed Chlorophonia (m) Endemic to Costa Rica and Western Panama.

I got up nice and early to photograph this shy bird as they are highly active at first light but only for a short time before they head off to feed and hide, certainly worth a 0545 start, the colours are amazing.

The Common Black-Hawk

I was really excited to see this beautiful adult hawk with its distinctive yellow cere and legs and its short tail. It looks very similar to the much larger Great Black Hawk but there are some other differences, like the white rump and bigger tail band.

Whilst in Costa Rica I never expected to see an American Dipper, a bird that I’ve always wanted to see.

I didn’t even realise they were resident there, my friend and fellow guide who’s lived there all his life has never seen one so I was even more pleased to have found a breeding pair.

The Green Breasted Mango Hummingbird is one of the more widely seen species found in Costa Rica and is often confused with the Rufous Tailed Hummingbird male, but the black stripe down the center of the throat (bordered by blue) gives it away.

Another stunner is the Blue Grey Tanager, one of the many Tanager species found in South/Central America.
Lots more of these stunning birds to come soon.

Gartered Trogon is such a beautiful bird & we were lucky enough to see it on our last day when we ventured into the hills.

Trogon’s breeding season starts from Feb to June.
It nests in a wasp, ant, or termite arboreal nest or a hole in a rotten tree, with a typical clutch of 2/3 eggs.

The beautiful Fiery Throated Hummingbird - Captured under natural light without the use of additional lures.

One of the highlights of being here in Costa Rica is photographing some of the 50+ species of Hummingbird, these amazing birds are everywhere!

The Crested Caracara - Airborne and alert this awesome falcon was such a beautiful sight to see especially with the action shot of its hunkered wing position.

Loving Costa Rica 🇨🇷🙏🌏🦜🦅

Another stunning bird whilst in Costa Rica is the Montezuma Oropendola which is a really large bird and makes the most strangest of sounds, almost like digital noise.

I attempted to capture the light hitting one side of the body to illuminate it’s bill, breast & the beautiful tail feathers

The Crested Caracara has to be one of my favourites birds of prey so far in Costa Rica.

I managed to get myself down low to create a nice diffused foreground and background allowing me to concentrate the bird as the focal point.

Collared Aracari 😀

What a great bird and lovely to photograph it in the rain, I set the shutter speed to around 1/60th to enable me to get the white streaks of rain drops. Not always easy when the bird moves so much.

The classic Costa Rican photograph of the stunning Keel Billed Toucan which is very colourful Latin American bird which lives in the tropical jungles and feeds of a variety of food.

Confusing moment

White Faced or Capuchin Monkey captured deep in the Costa Rican forest

Such a comical and photogenic species of monkey just enjoying life amongst the leaves and trees.
These monkeys eat fruit, insects, leaves and small birds which are in abundance in this vast wilderness #mamals

American Tree Sparrow (M) - Spizelloides arborea

This handsome Sparrow 1 of 25 species of the 3 families, Emberizidae, Estrildidae and Passeridae found in Canada are also often overlooked as a photographic subject but they don’t half look good in the snowy environment.

Blue Jay - Cyanocitta cristata

This beautifully bright colour bird is often overlooked as a photographic subject due to its common status but like our European Jay you can’t escape the beauty in the plumage, highly intellectual birds that just brighten up a snowy landscape.

White Tailed Deer foraging in the forests of the Quebec Mountains. Not an easy stalk with a snow covered landscape.

The Deer knew I was there but I didn’t push my luck, with a max zoom range & a little crop in post I was able to get a detailed shot using the Canon R3 & 200-400L

The Wood Duck - What stunning birds they are! Amazing colours on this male which really shine on a cold dull winter weather day.

They are usually pretty shy but on this occasion I was able to capture this handsome chap.

Taiga Merlin - Falco columbarius columbarius

Not much of a story in this picture only that these small rapid falcons are so quick in flight.
