Well, nationalists tend to need new "others" and if cross-border cooperation is contrary to your agenda, clashes come out sooner or later. And anti-European rhetoric is bound to need new targets, if they leave the EU

A very good article, but ignores the many regional powers that will be less constrained as well (Turkey, Saudi, etc.) grow more conviced every day: the only way we can have peace is a United States of Europe, irreversible integration. Anything else is liable to be picked apart by the big three.

And in both countries the nationalists who want to tear apart those ties are # 1 or # 2, In France the leftist alliance is openly hostile to Germany too.
