I have forgotten
the day I left
my mother's womb

but I remember
the day I left
my cherished home.

I condemn my mother
for giving a birth to me
in such a world wherein
being a human is a crime.

I'm from somewhere
I want to forget but I can't,
and even in my coma,
I take its name with pride.

I know this holds some bitterness but all it takes to agree is only to be humane.

The rainfall and windflaw have been torrential in Cox's Bazar Rohingya Refugee Camp and the refugees have been coping badly with landside and the destruction of frail shelters.

[The poem dates back to last year's monsoon and was published in my second book, “Still I Smile”.]

The Journey of a Young Rohingya Literateur

For Sirajul, writing is more than self-expression; it is resistance. His poetry bears witness to trauma, amplifies silenced voices, and preserves the Rohingya identity that state violence has long tried to erase.

The international community now sees the other side of the NUG and Aung San Suu Kyi. Nobel Peace Laureate Suu Kyi, known as the mother of democracy in Myanmar, does not support recognition of the Rohingya's right to citizenship.

Out of devastation, I wrote this poem back in 2023 when WFP first reduced rations for the Rohingya. Now, I am devastated once again by coming across WFP halving their current food supply.

Last Night, I Was Awake

With a mind full of relief,
I lay down on your supple thigh.
With your tender hands,
you caressed my hair,
it felt as though I was in heaven.

Sirajul Islam, a Rohingya writer and activist in Jamtoli camp, expressed to me recently: “Bangladesh plays the most crucial role in ensuring justice and accountability for us and our repatriation with the fulfillment of our demands.
