They won elections while being painted with defund by the right and then turned around and increased funding instead. Anyway, I guess I care less about rhetoric being politically useful than I do about it representing my actual view: that our entire immigration system is cruel and unnecessary.

Well, we said it a lot and then the Democrats running for office basically ignored it. They then won and increased funding for police.

Lot of Dems running around talking about open borders last election? I must have missed them. All I heard were Republicans accusing them of such and Dems trying to prove them wrong by being anti-immigration.

And then, instead of pushing back against the GOP, Dems agreed and raised funding. Maybe Dems embracing the left would have gone badly. I don't think so, but I don't know. I do know that we haven't yet seen what happens when they do.

ICE simply doesn't need to exist, though. It didn't exist until after 9/11. Frankly, enforcing a border between the US and Canada or Mexico makes as much sense as enforcing one between Oregon and California.

For what its worth, open borders would be good and were the default in the world until really quite recently. The entirety of our immigration system is built on the false premise that immigration is inherently risky or bad and it just isn't true.

Statements like this confuse me because we've watched over the last 20 years as Republicans have big electoral success by moving to the right with simplistic rhetoric. Maybe just saying what your goals are and trying to accomplish them is a workable strategy in US politics?

I mean, that was a plan that worked for them in 2010. It’s nice to see the change

It's illegal for the president to relieve student loan debt. It's completely fine for the president to unilaterally decide to have the head of a foreign nation black bagged on foreign soil.

You may be being facetious but I bet you aren’t all that wrong. My strong suspicion is that there aren’t a lot of people with one or two Star Trek uniforms. You’ve either got none or a bunch of

On my second deployment we got a new 2LT right out of West Point. He got assigned to the night shift with me (we hadn't had an officer before and had no use for one, but whatever). He would sit around and complain about being bored. Once, I suggested he read a manual. He declined.
