Day 2 of the Fall session!

Up first: BC Green MLA Jeremy Valeriote asks about the health risks of LNG.

"Is the Minister unaware of the health risks to British Columbians, or is pressure from industry lobbyists and foreign billionaires just that much more important to this government?"

In the first Question Period of the fall session, MLA Rob Botterell asks the Premier to meet the BCGEU's calls for fair wages.

The government has the fiscal capacity to act. What’s missing is the will.

It's the first day of the fall session! #bcpoli

First up: MLA Valeriote responds to Bill M214: Firefighters Health Act. This is Private Members Bill builds on the work from a BC Greens PMB from 2024 -- protecting firefighters from the health risks of forever chemicals.

If anyone has additional information on this incident, please contact local Penticton RCMP.

We’re so sorry to hear about this attack on an elected official’s home. MLA Boultbee, the rest of the legislature has your back.

Photo of tweet from MLA Amelia Boultbee:

“Last night at approximately 10 PM several vehicles and individuals approached my home and rocks were thrown at my home and vehicle. Police were called and investigated. While the motive or perpetrators remains unknown to me, this is very distressing in light of recent events.

If anyone has additional information please contact the local Penticton RCMP.”

This government has sacrificed climate, air and water quality, ecosystem integrity, and Indigenous title and rights considerations to push LNG projects forward.

The Premier needs to get real about LNG flaring, and include it in emissions reporting and environmental assessments.

I also want to sincerely thank our interim leader, Jeremy Valeriote, for guiding the BC Greens with such steadiness and commitment over the past year.

Congratulations Emily on a hard-fought and well-earned campaign victory! I have confidence our new leader will lead a strong grassroots movement across this province and strengthen the BC Green Party writ large.

Emily is an extraordinary organizer who has built movements, challenged powerful interests, and inspired people across the province. Her leadership signals a bold new chapter for the BC Greens!

1/ What happened to BC’s Coastal Marine Strategy?

BC is one of the only coastal jurisdictions in North America without a comprehensive plan to protect its coast.

No matter how the BC government tries to spin it, this LNG export project is 100% owned by US companies, will be built in Korea, and represents a 30-megaton carbon bomb that threatens the health and livelihoods of local residents.

Yesterday, a letter from a leadership contestant’s legal counsel was released to the media, indicating they are considering litigation over the party’s ID verification process. Here's interim Leader Jeremy Valeriote's statement:

The Province already has the roadmap to resolve these issues in partnership with First Nations and environmental groups:
☑️Implement all 14 recommendations of the Old Growth Strategic Review
💰Follow through on conservation financing commitment
🌲 Follow through on old-growth deferrals.

We’re disheartened about the situation unfolding in the Upper Walbran area. Logging irreplaceable old growth is one of many symptoms of an industry in crisis, and blockades are a result of government inaction.

It has been five years since the release of the Old Growth Strategic Review, and while this should be a moment to celebrate bold action to protect old growth, instead we are marking half a decade of delay, indecision, and government inaction.

Individuals who have access to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program should not be blamed for a program rife with fraud and abuse. Companies and corporations who have abused it need to be held accountable, not the migrants accessing it.

The Premier chose to recklessly push a narrative that blames migrants for food bank usage and youth unemployment, while presiding over an economy made more vulnerable by the government’s decisions.

Air pollution is one of the greatest threats to human health and kills 7 million people per year. Vancouver Coastal Health estimates that air pollution costs B.C. at least $14 billion in health spending every year.

British Columbians should not be left to fend for themselves in smoke-filled summers.

A #CleanAirAct offers a clear, achievable path forward. The provincial government must take air quality seriously and act now to protect the health of our communities.

We've done the reviews. Now PFAC has the mandate to put them into action -- and that includes aligning with UNDRIP and fully implementing the Old Growth Action Plan.

The Provincial Forest Advisory Council is another win from the BC Greens’ cooperation agreement with the BC NDP. We hope PFAC’s mandate is enough to finally give BC forests the paradigm shift they desperately need.

Does Mount Polley sound familiar? It’s the site of the worst mining disaster in Canada’s history. Imperial Metals has never been fined or faced legal repercussions. Your tax dollars have covered $40million in clean-up. A decade later, Quesnel Lake is still contaminated.
