Key boxes have become modern-day parasites. Planning compliance rates in Ireland are abysmally low, and regulations are not consistently enforced. No wonder we have record homeless figures every time they're published.

The new record of 5,014 homeless children living in State-provided accommodation is a national disgrace. Ireland's housing system has deteriorated primarily because of ineffective government policies.

31 Too Young To Die.

Allowing properties to remain derelict for decades should be considered a crime against the state. Ireland's housing system is in a state of disrepair, primarily due to ineffective Government policies.

Leaving properties derelict for decades should be a crime against the state.
It's worth mentioning that by the end of June 2025, another monthly record of 15,915 people—including 4,958 children—were accessing emergency homeless accommodation.

No. 43, formerly Gig's Place, is now the Richmond Restaurant—it's great to see these vacant properties coming back to life.

My coloured Robert French c.1900 photo shows tram number 119 travelling along Irishtown Road in the inner suburb of Dublin City. Irishtown (An Baile Gaelach) originated as a settlement in the 1400s when the English expelled the Irish from within the city walls of Dublin.

We should be making livable homes, not 32-square-meter units.
To put this in perspective: a standard tennis court for doubles play is 260 square meters, meaning eight of these minimum-sized studio apartments could fit into a single court.

College Green could have avoided much of its ugly street clutter by using the "third rail" technology, similar to what is used in Bordeaux in France. This technology eliminates the need for poles and power lines. Unfortunately, it wasn't implemented mainly because of cost concerns.

Approaching Connolly Train Station, it's striking to see all the empty fields amid a housing crisis, with over fifteen thousand people accessing emergency accommodation.

My coloured 1895 Robert French photo of The Malahide Seawater Baths in Malahide, County Dublin. Sadly, the baths were demolished in 1984, and an apartment block now stands in their place on the corner of Bath Avenue, immediately beyond the Grand Hotel towards Portmarnock.

The transformation of Malahide (Mullach Íde) in Fingal, County Dublin, since 1953 has been remarkable. This growth can largely be attributed to developers who recognised the area's potential in the 1960s, leading to the construction of numerous housing estates.
