Yes the ITV network was a direct competitor to the BBC, but split into 15 initially.
As you surmised, Lee Grade did make his reputation with Ivanhoe and Robin Hood , etc. But interestingly, a lot of the people writing and producing these were exiles fleeing McCarthism.

In the UK, the second television broadcaster (after the BBC) was a commercial system called ITV. This was divided up into several regional districts so that they did not become too powerful. Each of these franchises were responsible for buying their own programs 1/2

The head of CBS was baulking at how much money the album was costing. When they asked for even more he demanded they play him just a little of what they had recorded. They sat him down in the studio and played him the title track. Tears in his eyes, he said “how much do you want?”

Who of us suspected at the time that this was just the start of a hugely influential part of our childhoods. Next up Fireball XL5, then Stingray and then the jewel in the crown: Thunderbirds. Still revered today. FAB.

Not many realise that early Soviet cosmonauts had to bail out of their capsules before landing and parachute the remainder of the way down as their inefficient craft would hit the ground too hard. Tereshkova was chosen because of her skills as a parachutist.
