Just this guy, you know?

Pathologically incapable of rating movies, so I no longer even try.
We've all seen posters use a little hyperbole. Covers that are, ahem, unrepresentative of the film. But to just plain lie to this extent? The only truth here is 'some […] have been released by Warner Bros.' It's RBF's release of Shaolin Chastity Kung Fu, in case you wondered.

This went straight into my top five Johnnie To movies. It's not a musical, but definitely evokes Umbrellas of Cherbourg (more through vibe than style). Simon Yam plays against type, and is wonderful. Chameleon did us a great service by bringing this out (and including the soundtrack).

Next in my cataloguing quest was Battle of the Damned… Dolph and Robots vs. Zombies. I had no recollection of it whatsoever. I soon discovered why; shakycam infests the film throughout and utterly ruins what could've been a most entertaining flick. Now I must excise it from my memory again.

Really liked #SomeGuyWhoKillsPeople a decade ago but would it stand the test of time? It turned out to be even better than I recall.A great script elicited some damn fine performances, not least from Barry Bostwick. A fine start to my @terrorvisionvids.bsky.social collection.

Wasn't expecting this #psysicalmedia delivery yet, but those lovely people at @terrorvisionvids.bsky.social surprised me. I'll be keeping Frogman until last in the hope – the belief! – that it's more kappa than scuba. More bayou than Cousteau. More batrachian than subaquean.

I'll stop now.

This was all over the place for the first 45ish minutes, but it settled down to become a serious murder mystery with a backdrop of racial tensions in San Francisco in 1900. I was starting to feel its 135-min running time towards the end, but it was definitely worth a trip to the cinema.

Revolver is an impressive thriller with a top-notch performance from Oliver Reed. Nicely done car cases and decent action go alongside a plot that doesn't follow the traditional path such films take. Overall, a damn fine film.

I know I've seen this before, and recently. How did I make it to the end without recognising that the last ten minutes or so were lifted wholesale for the end of Top Secret? I saw parallels throughout, but the ending… I was just waiting for the airmen to play darts.
Great film, though.

I've never really understood dual-format releases, but now I actively hate them as I enter another damn copy of the movie into the database. Displaying the information is tricky, too. Three of the more complex cases are shown here; if anyone has a better way of displaying the info, I'm all ears.

Postie just came through with a fresh batch of #PhysicalMedia courtesy of the fine folk at Eureka. As is traditional, I just intended to order the 4K of Cure and ended up getting another bunch of stuff, too. Though I've been meaning to get the In the Line of Duty flicks for ages, now.

My paltry words are wholly inadequate to the task of expressing the wondrousness of Violet Evergarden, and this film is a fitting coda to what must surely go down as one of the all-time greatest of all anime series.

I try to be jaded and cynical, but even so I went into this with high hope. And those hopes were absolutely met. It's cheap, yes. But it's enormous fun. There was one scene, though, where I think the mic was visible (making me suspect that this was intended to be shown in 4:3).

If there's one bright spot in all those years enduring dogshit like Star Treks: Discovery and Picard, it's that when something this awful comes along it can't really be considered a disappointment.

#NowWatching against my better judgement: Deranged is based on the nefarious deeds of a real-life serial killer, a genre in which I have zero point fuck all interest. But the 4K just arrived as part of a subscription, so I might as well get it over with.

When Branded to Kill & Tokyo Drifter came out on Criterion DVD, the world was quite sniffy about Suzuki's other Nikkatsu films which I increasingly see as unfair to both Suzuki & Nikkatsu. As a case in point one can watch it this a simple Yakuza flick, but there's much more to it than that.

Movies used to have decent taglines. When did we lose our way as a species?

Not normally something I'd go for, but a subscription to @filmsradiance.bsky.social means that I got it anyway. And though I Fidanzati is essentially a romance (not in my top 78 favourite genres) I loved them both, & must add yet another director to the 'get everything' list.

Every time I see this I'm astonished that such a film was made in the 50s. The ideas, long in print, were rarely on screen and when combined with amazing effects and a compelling story, it's clear that we've been blessed with a true masterpiece of the genre. Nay, a masterpiece of cinema.

The plot in Johnny O'Clock takes a while to get going, but the time is well spent in drawing the characters, and the great dialogue keeps the attention so that one doesn't really mind. It's really that dialogue that stands out here, elevating a standard noir to a few points above average.

Well, that was just glorious. Definitely the best of the first three Ator films (and I just discovered that there's a fourth).

Read all abaht it on letterboxd.

Aside: I can't embed a letterboxd link and screenshots in the same post. No preview of the review for you.

An email from @88films.bsky.social saying I should use some bonus points led to a quick glance at their site where I found 1 that looked swords-n-sorceryish; no further reading needed. It arrived and it's… it's… an Ator film I never knew existed! So much for my plans for the next two hours.

Given the cinematic milieu of the time all 40s fed movies were essentially copaganda. Walk a Crooked Mile differs in that it's aware of this and tells us as much at the start. More heavy-handed than most, but if one can get over the cartoonish commies it passes the time enjoyably enough.

It may be Fred McMurray appearing in Pushover that made me think of Double Indemnity, but such a comparison is pretty unfair (mostly). There are parallels, but this is a decent film in its own right. I was particularly impressed with the opening bank heist, but enjoyed the film as a whole.
