"The days are getting shorter and colder, but I ask you to remember: even as the Winter comes in, there is Hope and there is Light."
~ Seamus Heaney

Towards Another Summer.

I’ve done the maths: 10 days to equal the Tories, 52 days to equal Reform and 72 days to equal Labour. There’s hope in the air!

Lots don’t open Monday/Tuesday even here in a mid sized city. Kitchens are often only open on weekends.

Ha! I hadn’t heard that.

And bigger than the Labour Party by the end of the year.
I expect the membership growth will fall off a little at some point but even if it falls to a longer term average of +1000 a day they could easily be the UK’s largest political party by membership sometime next year.

At the current rate of growth of an average 3000 new members per day, it won’t be long before the Greens have a bigger membership than the Conservative Party. Certainly before the end of the month. Extraordinary.
ukgreenstats.bsky.social
Yesterday, the Greens were celebrating 87,000 members.

Today, they have skyrocketed 93,000 members, making this most likely the fastest growth the party has ever seen before in terms of membership figures.

It’s a further illustration of the government’s reverse midas touch. Where a policy announcement is framed so that nobody is remotely convinced. You could almost believe they live in a bubble of their own making and never speak to people beyond it.

The Northern Ireland on LSD aspect of all this is quite something

It means England and Wales, not Scotland. This is apparently the UK in that foreign country called Londoninium.

I wonder how English education ministers are going to react to putting themselves at a competitive disadvantage against Wales? I can’t help smirking!

Lovely to see a first exhibition of a selection of my new work 'The Edge of Ruin' in Colwyn Bay for The Northern Eye festival, organised by @orielcolwyn.bsky.social
You can see these images on the outside of the town library windows for the month. Thanks to all who helped the install.

I don’t even think he should be arrested for that, because we live in a democracy. Or at least I assumed we did.

Big news and not only relevant to Italy. Keir Starmer’s government has also been criticised for supplying parts for the F35 military aircraft used to bomb Gaza. The international laws on complicity are pretty clear.

🔥 Wow!

“Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says she has been accused of “complicity in genocide” in a complaint lodged with the International Criminal Court (ICC) over Rome’s support for Israel as it bombards Gaza”

As far as I can remember, I don’t think he was ever a Thatcherite, he was always a ‘wet’, a one nation conservative. We’d probably call him a Blarite in modern parlance, with all the seeds of its own destruction, but not the most awful of right wingers. Splitting hairs I know!

“A wholly destructive contribution to a civilised society.” Former Conservative government minister Michael Heseltine on the party’s descent into hate, division and fanaticism. Modern fascism in a nutshell.

“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social asks Lord Heseltine about remarks he made at Conservative Party Conference.
