Hills & paddlesport for fun.
Also dangerous with SIP, WebRTC, BGP, Javascript, ML & chainsaws.
Know too much about how the Interwebs work.
Really struggling to understand prediction markets.
Someone putting $1m on both markets would be up at least $80,000 in 24hrs. It can't work like that.
Presumably there are no rational participants and quotes are manipulative positions that would collapse if anyone tried.

Regular reminder on the walk back from the pub last night that Herdwicks are the SAS of feral sheep.
Some poor soul will no doubt be wondering how the cam stones they just bust a tyre on ended up in the middle of the road this morning.

This is insane @metpoliceuk.
I get that it makes no sense to have an officer sit in a room through 10+ hours of video to possibly detect a crime, but the commercial cost of getting this done by focussed humans (poss with AI assist) has to be about £5... https://t.co/uJpZ9jeXy3

Why it will be a while before we see the #OpenAI speech-to-speech model being deployed at scale...
Building a (presumably) WebRTC infrastructure to sink hundreds of millions of hours a month of media streams into stateful processors is non-trivial.

Why good audio conversational AI isn't shipping at scale yet
OpenAI showed a fantastic demo of real, natural sounding, latency free conversational AI in an update nearly two months ago, but it isn't shipping yet. It probably won't be for a while. Here is why... Talking to an AI isn't exactly new. From Alexa, to telephone bots, we have been

This.
If your computer systems deliver corporate emails to employees in their working environment which say "click on this", and your company explodes if they do, then maybe there is something a bit wrong with those systems.
How the heck did we get to this point. https://t.co/RRo6oufb9a

What should I have done by now? packed everything up for @emfcamp .
What did I do instead? noticed they have a Jambonz server whilst registering my phone, which set me off down a path which means I have not started packing yet. Doh.

Practical insights from the OpenAI announcement yesterday that could be useful for folks developing audio conversation services... https://www.pickering.org/openai-audio-streaming-announcement/
TL;DR carry on building, good is about to get easier (using some platforms).
About That OpenAI Audio Chat Demo
What the OpenAI announcement means for telephony and other audio only conversational AI: carry on building, things are accelerating. Yesterdays OpenAI announcement majored on audio & video conversations. There was an impressive speech demo which is way ahead of what any of us working in this area can build right now

This is like painters objecting to the invention of photography, come full-circle.
AI generated pseudo images will dominate applications where people care about the aesthetic, not accuracy.
Lens based photograph providers focussing on traceable authenticity will build their own… https://t.co/SNx...

Our brains are particularly badly adapted to cope with accelerating societal change at the same time as we age cognitively.
Unfortunately this change is an essential part of growth that drives our collective standard of living and the only thing that will… https://t.co/cSPn...

If a disreputable organisation asks to use pictures, never say "no".
Instead say "I really don't want to be associated with you, so the cost is £1m per use which you may accept by simply using the pictures".
They will use them anyway so better to have a watertight contract 🤣 https://t.co/XPejdaDOMU

Apple pays Spotify Nothing...
Spotify has created an app at it's own expense, made more complicated & costly by Apple app store restrictions. The availability of the app drives Apple hardware purchases, producing massive revenues for them, but they pay Spotify nothing.
Discuss.

Was involved in a discussion yesterday evening about how AI can *improve* democracy. It ended up being pretty depressing. Actually something that parses and summarises every government data drop like this within minutes of release...

I don't buy this.
It would be interesting to know how many of the Fujitsu staff responsible for Horizon were BCS members and how the ethical obligations they were under via their membership played out in their conduct once under management pressure.
