The Greek muses from top left to the bottom right: Calliope, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Clio, Urania and Polyhymnia. It was found in Grand Masters Palace in Rhodes, Greece, and it dates to the 1st century BC. #MosaicMonday

#MosaicMonday - Mosaic panel of the Three Graces from Narlıkuyu in Mersin, southern Turkey: ca. 4th Century AD. The panel originally graced (see what I did there?) a Roman bath complex, which the inscription indicates was established by one Poimenios. #Myth #Archaeology 🏺

A beautifully intricate geometric mosaic from Silchester, Hampshire ( #Roman Calleva Atrebatum).
The materials used were mainly local: limestone (yellow), Purbeck chalk (white), Kimmeridge shale (black) & crushed tile (red).
