This is not to say I don't think it's horrible and also extremely fucked up that they are saying things like this — but part of the reason those comments had such relevance is because people actually did feel hurt by them and were emotional about it.

Hell, I grew up with a poster on my wall of that Pat Robertson quote about how feminism is "a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."

It's hard to top that.

I find it very hard to not treat it as white noise. Which is unfortunate because the Right has been able to make such a thing out of the "You all think we're bad people! You want us to feel badly about ourselves!" shit. It's clearly a very successful tactic!

The reason it sticks to the Left is because we're supposed to be the nice ones.

The only Republican something like that has stuck to, to my knowledge, is Mitt Romney, and I think it's because he had the demeanor of a nice, polite person.

I've seen a few people question why these sorts of comments haven't hurt Miller, Trump, etc. the way "basket of deplorables" hurt Clinton.

And I think it's just because we expect them to say and do mean shit.

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America
