I hope you can accept this as an apology. I don’t want to divide our small community any more than you do. I appreciate the concerns you raised and I see the value in what you were saying, and going forward, I hope to show that in my advocacy posts.

I apologize to those of you who didn’t see me at my best last night, and I hope you know that I’m always striving for self-improvement. Go forward in kindness and grace toward yourself and others. The world needs it.

I personally feel it’s important to be able to admit when we were wrong and aspire to make amends. I also make this post with the goal of making it clear that DeafBlindness is not a monolith. Some of us drive, some of us don’t, and that comes down to the individual.

It hurt my pride, a lot, when I felt like someone was trying to tell me what I can and cannot do, especially under a completely separate legal system. But that didn’t give me the right to lash out in a way that honestly furthered a stereotype of an angry, self-righteous D/B person. I was a bit mean.

So, I drive with shades. Sometimes I wear my shades out because it helps me comfortably interact with the world. I also have to use filters and screen readers on my devices sometimes for the same reasons, and that’s why I benefit from alt-text.

I have day blindness—my vision causes me pain, so I reflexively squint or close my eyes a lot, and flashing lights can be really bad for how my brain processes light. The eye doctor I work with confirmed that there’s nothing wrong with my eyes directly, it all has to do with my brain and nerves.

I should also note that there are many people here in the US who are considered legally blind and can still drive using assistance like filters, shades, etc.

No, I’m not considered legally blind. I just have a degree of vision loss that requires assistive technology to compensate for.

I don’t wish to make you feel bad or unsafe. As far as I’m concerned, there are thousands of people out on the road with worse vision than me driving too, I just need some light filters and (with a doctor’s blessing, mind you) I’m a perfectly safe driver.
I’m not calling this gatekeeping.

You came to my post, a person who has a radically different kind of Deafblindness from you (I don’t have usher’s or RP), and made me feel like you expect our experiences with vision and legal barriers to driving to be the same, when they are not. Just because you can’t drive doesn’t mean I can’t.

Alright, I’d rather not make enemies with someone within my own very small community, so I’m gonna level with you here. I do respect that giving up driving was a difficult decision for you and event for you to go through, but please understand the situation from my perspective.

Tl;Dr, don’t tell me what I can and cannot do. You don’t know my vision, just as I don’t know yours.

Hi, I live in the United States? I have no idea what you’re talking about, and I also have been in direct contact with my eye doctor who confirms that I’m fine to drive.
If you live wherever this magical DVLA is, you don’t have to worry about me driving, ’cause I don’t live there.

Perhaps in the future I will be in that position, but for now, my vision is thankfully stable. We’ll see what happens.

I get day blindness—so the opposite issue. My eyes cause me pain when processing light, so I wear shades to counteract and make it easier for me to see and drive. If I was unable to drive and considered myself unsafe because of that I would stop driving, but at present it’s something I’m able to do.
