At this point I can’t help thinking that his quality of life in prison must be better than at home. Maybe we should feel sorry for poor Enoch that the only way he can get a break from Mammy is getting sent to jail.

When English people try to pretend that they no longer have a colonial mindset, that is the example I give.

A part of their brains doesn’t recognise Northern Irish Catholics as fully human, and they don’t view it as the British state attacking its own citizens.

I thought it was made up by singer songwriter Mundy after he was rejected by the Blue Man Group?

The Great Batsby

A Batman story set in 1920s Long Island in which aloof millionaire Juice Grayne throws lavish parties. The mystery, however, is that nobody ever seems to be able to find him at his parties, and some man dressed as a Bat, kivking lumps out of the poor, appeared right when Juice did.

What’s the deal with skinny white guys that get into politics looking for validation from the exact type of people who bullied them in school? We know that you want Biff to like you, but is it really worth destroying civilisation as we know it?

It’s disturbing that Trump talks about all this in terms of a financial transaction - buying and owning Greenland.

Greenland is not just a territory, it’s a collective of people.

Trump is saying that he wants to buy more than 50,000 people from another state. Clear breech of human rights laws.

Is it 2003 again?

My dog passed away last weekend. I’m avoiding Hamnet like the plague. Big Dong zombie was far less traumatic

It’s this type of thing, which really bugs me, irregardless of the context.

But they didn’t colonise Peru!!!!

I can accept talking bears.

Okay, but let’s talk about why Peruvian bears sound like they went to Eton? Like, WTF is going on there?

No, it’s a structural thing, primarily. One that seems to be getting more and more pronounced

There are absolutely lovely people in academia. They are the ones living under constant stress because they’re trying to cope in a system that’s trying to break them.

In one of my jobs. The head of school came from a different school because they hated him so much that they’d do anything to get rid of him.

He suggested turning the entire school into a single broad degree, and sacking most of the staff

It’s time for Arteta to show what he’s made of. Sure, Arsenal managers have blown title races in the past, but losing it from here will cement him as the Weberian ideal type Arsenal manager. I believe in him.

My PhD supervisor was two years from retirement, and the university he worked at for over 20 years wanted his salary off the books. They loaded a man in his mid-60s with an impossible teaching load to push him to early retirement.

That’s the thanks you get at the end of it all.

One of my friends who became a secondary teacher after his PhD gave the best summation - academia is a system in which the least interesting, most certain and arrogant people rise to the top, and the most interesting people have their confidence battered to the point where they eventually give up.

Oh, I feel this.

I spent a decade to become an academic, and another decade treading water trying to survive on precarious contracts.

The pay isn’t great, all the joy is taken out of research by peer review, and the internal politics is soul destroying.

The only part I miss is teaching.

I would have a lot more respect for him if he came out and just left it at,

To think there are people who still firmly believe that staying on Twitter is bravely fighting the good fight against fascism.

No, my dear. You see using the fascist app materially benefits fascism.

Unfortunately, in this timeline we got stuck with Musk instead of Veidt, and the most we can expect for him is doing a big dump in Time Square and trying to blame the trans community for it.

Zimmer and Greenwood too, poor Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are going to be working 7 day weeks scoring every woke films.
January 15, 2026 at 4:46 PM
And, if not clear, my problem is that Twitter was bought for the express purpose of furthering far right politics and electoral campaigns. It’s not that it’s “too right-wing”, it’s that it has been designed to ensure that regardless of how many left people stay on it, it will promote fascism.
