Martin, in a way, already entrusted someone else to finish the book and what we got was season 8.

I'm not sure many even realize what a monumental task finishing that book is now that he has an uphill battle to redeem the story from what the show did.

I am assuming here, that they meant the widespread commercial availability of VHS as a format, 1977-2006ish (MASH, Patton, and The Sound of Music releasing in 1977 as a starting point). But, even then, we are just coming up on matching that time frame with DVD.

This was a consistent thing that I recall in my sci fi class in college. Historically speaking,sci fi as a genre or term was generally viewed as being lesser than other fiction or viewed as something authors were ashamed of at times. But, I never really got that feeling from the authors themselves.
