Historian and archaeologist working on the Mediterranean. Used to pretend, badly, to be a dead base ball player. Not sure why I’m here now except I missed people from the old place.

Well, one night’s reprieve from the goblet, Boone.

2109: a century since the last title. Aaron Boone looks at the goblet. He knows what he must do. Again. Go back and hit that dinger. Again. And maybe this time, next time, he’ll guide the team to a ring. The bitter taste, then a too-brief moment of silence. And then, the 11th. And maybe, redemption.

The Texas Tribune has done a fantastic job of covering the pretty horrendous stuff the legislature and others are doing at TX universities; my colleagues routinely refer to it and rely on it for information. Good to see this happening.

I’m thrilled about the upcoming Texas Tribune Festival, when I’ll be interviewing the amazing Catherine Coleman Flowers about civil rights, activism, faith, sewage and more. festival.texastribune.org/event/c17d2d...

Lucius Cornelius Sulla is bucking tradition and legal precedent in leading his army back to the city of Rome due to what he says is rampant corruption and to support his crackdown on illegal political chicanery.

From @theathletic.com: The Yankees are one loss away from another season of failing to win a title with Aaron Judge at the peak of his powers. How many more chances will the Yankees get before he starts to decline?
The Yankees’ season is on the line. So are their chances to maximize peak Aaron Judge

I drive from north to west TX and back a lot and am consistently struck by just how much visible evidence there is of cleaner energy being used and developed and how little of this is mentioned

This is a fantastic form of public engagement! I haven’t heard of this either

I suppose more than anything else I like the discourse around this, as the reaction to it seems to suggest so clearly to people the monarchical ambitions of this guy. As someone teaching coinage and iconography in the late Repiblic next week in a deeply red state, I’m curious as to how this will go.

Caesar’s actions at home are different, of course, but part of a longer emerging ethos around glorifying military commanders, one very much tied to transforming values as Rome expanded.
rocinante.bsky.social
Lots of “Julius Caesar was the first Roman to appear on coins/produce coins with his likeness on them.” This isn’t totally true. Flaminius did this in Greece a century earlier, though perhaps they were gifts rather than mandated by him. Others, like Pompey, did so but only outside of Italy.
