That part is unfortunate. But if it serves as any consolation, Numenor (Gondor's progenitor kingdom) also fell under Sauron's influence. And they fell so hard it destroyed them.

Fantastic. Though I'm not all fond of the Aang part since the whole point was finding a way to end it without violence.

I think the best tutorial is the one in Fire Emblem The Blazing Blade (just Fire Emblem outside Japan). It takes the form of a mini campaign with it's own storyline, each chapter dedicated to a specific game mechanic and slowly letting go of the player's hand.
