Speaking of Edo period japan; recently I've been reading a really good manga called "Ōoku: The Inner Chambers", which is an alternate history of the tokugawa shogunate. Basically a pox that only affects men spreads across the land and turns Edo period japan into a matriarchal society. Good read!
