After a great week in DC, I landed in Salvador-Brazil for meetings, seminar and a workshop in my alma mater! Of course the highlight was Mel, the “security” dog using her sweater because it was freezing (22 degrees 😅)

A huge thank you to Luis Felipe López-Calva for inviting us @unu-wider.bsky.social to be part of such a rich and inspiring event. This event helped set the stage for the 11th ECINEQ Conference, and we contribute debating how tax data can be used to study poverty and inequality in LMICs

Starting recap 🧵for day 2 of the @unuwider conference. 1st presentation @DiogoBrittoBr @LucasWarwar presents patterns of [low] intergenerational mobility in Brazil; though estimates are higher than they would be if not accounting for informal income; joint w/@Brenorsampaio

Thrilled to see my guidebook (go.unu.edu/SJ9xs) alongside Amartya Sen’s seminal work—both his classic first-ever @unu-wider.bsky.social working paper (lnkd.in/gdhbVFGn) and his book Hunger and Public Action! 📘✨ #WIDERDevConf2025

Kicking off @UNUWIDER #WIDERDevConf2025 with powerful insights: 🌍 Social protection is foundational, 💼 employment is the engine of development, and 💡 bold thinking is key in a world of crisis. The urgency for inclusive, evidence-based action has never been clearer.

6/ 🤔 Why the positive response? Yes, we show mechanisms:

Firms likely:

-Resolved regulatory uncertainty
-Anticipated future costs
-No significant rise in R&D
-Only marginal increase in tech-related imports

5/ and by differences in allowances take-up

4/ We show heterogeneous effects for the Manufacturing and Mining Sectors:

3/ ✅ Main findings: No evidence of negative impacts on sales, profits, capital, or jobs.

Instead, firms increased activity post-announcement. Think:
🔼 Sales
🔼 Employment
🔼 Capital
🔼 Profits

2/ 📊 Using tax admin data (2011–2021), we track how manufacturing & mining firms reacted to the tax’s announcement in 2015 and implementation in 2019.

As exceções sao profissionais …
