You don't think the issue has actually changed? The blowouts of years past were pre-NIL where there were the haves and have-nots. Now we have NIL + more teams + a more even talent spread, but we include have-nots by design instead of keeping teams with closer talent. And yes, agree, A&M/UM was trash

Buddy, if you live in the USA good luck retiring without investing. You can buy a near-zero cost ETF that tracks the entire world equities market. It doesn't get more low risk than that. And you need 20 mins of studying to see that, not 20 years.

I think there are lots of reasons for this data. Market performance is a huge part, ease of accessibility to investing in equities/mutual funds (online banking, Robinhood, Vanguard self-serve, etc etc etc), and Gen Z seems particularly adept at and willing to invest money at an early age.
