I thought we were descended from apes not raccoons… 😳 Bless!
A raccoon entered a liquor store the other day and drank his fill: rum, moonshine, even peanut butter whiskey. Then he passed out on the floor of the bathroom. Don’t worry, he’s OK, and was safely released back into the wild.

The far right’s blind spot is they think that voters who softly pivot to them around specific issues, share their underlying values & objectives. But of course the far right doesn’t have any values & when voters discover this, they go “no, hang on, that’s not what I meant” & kick them out.

I think they might find “low trust issues” with non-Reform voters a far bigger problem if they pivot that way.

Finally finished watching ‘Human’ on iPlayer & feeling mildly bereft. What a sublime, captivating storyteller Ella Al-Shamahi is but it’s the story itself that so resonates. This is our story & it frames everything we are, everything we’ve become & everything we could still be (it’s not too late).

From what I’ve been reading of TNT’s #TourdeFrance coverage, this was the right decision
Cancelled my #Discovery+ subscription tonight before it skyrockets from £3 (£6 once discount ends) to £30 a month. Gutted to miss all the Spring cycling classics & grand tours but there’s only one response you can give to something like this if you have any self respect!

If you're looking for a timeline cleanser...

Before "Couch to 5k", there was "walk 1000 miles while carrying hazelnuts in your mouth." Britain’s Victorian obsession with long-distance walking was gloriously bonkers.

The great British walk-off: the crazy world of Victorian pedestrianism
Long before marathons and lycra, Britain was obsessed with walking feats – part sport, part spectacle, part madness

Production dilemma No.568 - wind. I’ve got terrible wind!

Gusts of up to 40mph & a shoot with on water dialogue shots.

Plans B, C & D warming up on the sidelines.

This kids is why pre-production needs to cover all options.

I’m on a shoot in Cornwall this week & the hotel’s right next to an old quarry. Great for evening explorations!

I’m rather ashamed to admit I’ve only finished three books in my whole life - The Hobbit, John Lydon’s autobiography & now The lie of the land by Guy Shrubsole. It confirmed all my suspicions but still taught me so much. A MUST read if you care about nature, land access & the environment in the UK.

Recently completed a six month production run for one of our online courses. What timing, just as the clocks change & the sun comes out! 😎

I have a ‘thing’ about bad habits becoming endemic in our industry & nothing gets me more agitated than a broadcast documentary with unconcealed dialogue cuts, as per YouTube. This is f***ing TV, you’re supposed to lead the way, not just follow what the kids do.

Will Gen’ AI kill the video industry? I’m not so sure. AI is simply a tool for generating a moving image, just like cameras & CGI. Video professionals are actually the key to making AI work because they understand how to make great shots. If you can see it, you can write it. AI is just a new camera!

My new book, THE LIE OF THE LAND, is an expose of what the 'custodians of the countryside' have done to nature in Britain. Out 12th Sept 2024, you can order a copy here: lnkfi.re/dsHR7n

The threats facing many democracies will never be countered or overcome until ‘we, the people’ become accountable to ourselves for what we do, what we believe & how we vote. We’re not prisoners in a dictatorship (yet). We’re self inflicting. It’s not about politicians & billionaires, it’s about us.

Apple’s AI summary thing seems to perfectly illustrate our problem with tech. They say “you need this to help you ignore all the stuff you don’t need.” We go “ooh, thank you”, when what we should say is “we’ll ignore it by switching off notifications we don’t need, so sod off”…. but we won’t!

Trying not to get too excited. On Sunday, I’ve got my first ultra in four years. It’s set to be a cracker, on trails I grew up walking on. Can barely contain my excitement but I need to make it successfully to the weekend & then it’s up to the trail gods. Such is the condition of the Sport Walker!

I know this may not be a subject anyone encountering me on here is looking for but everyone benefits from building their fitness & this is what I do (& I love it!). It’s easy to take up & you progress at your own pace. No gym, no classes, just you & the great outdoors!

‘Tis true!
People often say to us “you can’t enjoy the landscape if you walk fast”. We say (from experience) “you won’t miss a thing” & if anything, being more focused on walking fast actually sharpens your attention. Yes, you can get fitter AND still immerse yourself in nature’s beauty. It’s a win, win!

Ever since the Brexit vote, I’ve continually had Radiohead’s lyric “you do it to yourself you do, that’s what really hurts” in my head. It’s now on a loop with every passing election. We always place blame on politicians for their ‘failings’ but never hold ourselves accountable for what we believed
