20 years since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, killing over 1800 people and displacing over 1.5 million, many of whom were never able to return.

So one more time for all the people in the back: there is no climate justice without racial & economic justice. #ClimateSky

2 images of Hurricane Katrina survivors that circulated widely in the media in August 2005 and became a classic example of narrative power and framing.

TOP: is from the Associated Press - Tue Aug 30, 11:31 AM ET
CAPTION: A young man walks through chest deep flood water after looting a grocery store in New Orleans on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005.

BOTTOM: AFP/Getty Images/Chris Graythen) - Tue Aug 30, 3:47 AM ET
CAPTION: Two residents wade through chest-deep water after finding bread and soda from a local grocery store after Hurricane Katrina came through the area in New Orleans, Louisiana.

They appear to be doing the same thing to try and survive in the midst of a disaster. Notice anything different between them? Yep. You got it. The color of their skin.

Great example of how racism operates in media coverage. These two different frames on the same actions to survive in the midst of adversity have very significant consequences.

If they saying you are “finding” they send the National Guard to save you but if you are “looting” they send the National Guard to shoot you. Framing is often a matter of life and death.

Resilience hubs are changing how communities prepare for climate disasters, and Rogue Climate’s recent letter to the editor (LTE) in the Rogue Valley Times shows what’s possible. Read it now: buff.ly/YB2KMqa #CommunityResilience #WildfireReady #ResilienceHubs #OregonClimateAction
A picture of the LTE author Blanca and a quote that reads: “We are grateful to be one of few applicants to receive funding from the Community Resilience Hubs program, which will help us to be better prepared for and connected to the things our community will need in the future.”
