Unable to work in a visit to the Merzouga Desert this month, I decided to make my own Medfouna ("buried" Berber Pizza) instead: a lamb and mushroom stuffed pastry with dill, almonds and feta baked in an oven rather than a sand pit in the Sahara. 🍽️🍜 #Medfouna #Morocco #whatscooking
A round of pastry on a pizza tin. The pastry is filled with ground lamb, minced mushrooms and topped with feta cheese, dill and toasted almonds. A second sheet of pastry will go over the top to seal in the ingredients before it is baked in the oven. The Medfouna is ready to go into the oven now: the top pastry seals in the savory lamb and mushrooms. The top is dusted with paprika, toasted almonds, and dill. The Medfouna is out of the oven, ready to slice like pizza and serve. It is golden brown, resting on a wooden pizza board. Slices, like pizza, of the Medfouna with lamb filling, feta cheese and herbs.

Each one of these Papaver somniferum pods (opium poppy) holds over 1,000 seeds. (Possession of seed pods over 4 oz can be considered drug trafficking in some states.) We will sow these with abundance in the White House Cutting Garden.

Pieris japonica (Andromeda Shrub or Lily of the Valley Shrub) is a new addition to the White House Garden. All parts are poisonous. How perfect. The grayanotoxins affect the heart, brain and nervous system if consumed. Consuming honey from nectar of the plants results in "Mad Honey Disease."

Ok, I know this is pretty disgusting, but when I was raising kids, Halloween was a BIG deal and we had fun with it. My recipes are not nearly as good as yours - I write things down in such a way I hope to remember when I repeat them again. Your meatloaf cake is MUCH prettier than my #Feetloaf 😂
Uncooked raw beef "meatloaf" shaped like a foot. Disgusting, I know, but hey, it's for Halloween. There are onions for the toe nails and a Yukon gold potato for the leg bone. A cooked version of the feetloaf on a wooden cutting board. Only now that it is cooked, it looks like a burnt foot. The Feetloaf recipe written out.

My version of the Don Angie-inspired pinwheel lasagna includes the three sauces: Italian sausage bolognese, besciamella, and San Marzano tomato sauce. I used the frilly lasagna noodles because they are so pretty when rolled up. A bit of work, but perfect for Sunday night supper. 🍽️🍜👩‍🍳
Alternating cooked lasagna noodles topped with besciamella sauce with mozzarella, parmesan and parsley, and the others with red Italian sausage bolognese sauce. Assembly: a white noodle will be placed on top of a red noodle then rolled up like a pinwheel before being placed in a baking dish with tomato sauce. Ready to go into the oven: a baking dish with rolled pinwheel lasagna noodles in red tomato sauce. A dab of white besciamella sauce and a nugget of mozzarella cheese is placed on the top of each pinwheel. Fresh out of the oven: baked lasagna pinwheels in red tomato sauce. The wavy noodle tips have crisped up just a bit, as the original Don Angie recipe suggests. Plated: one lasagna pinwheel on a plate with a deep blue rim, and a side salad.

Indigofera suffruticosa 🌱🌿 was popular as a highly prized source of blue dye in the 17th and 18th centuries where it still grows wild on the north end of Georgia’s Ossabaw Island at North End Plantation, the site of a colonial-era indigo plantation. History in AltText.

Dinner Preparations: 12 strips of cooked lasagna noodles are laid out on a white counter. Half of the noodles are covered with a tomato-meat sauce, and the other half are covered with a white béchamel sauce sprinkled with mozzarella cheese and parsley.

Gelsemium sempervirens 'Woodlanders Pale Yellow' is a rare form of the vine. Discovered by Chris Early in northwestern Florida, the pale yellow flowers distinguish this cultivar from the golden yellow flowers typical of the species. See: AltText. #NativePlants #PoisonousPlants #WhiteHouseGarden 🌱🌿

Whipped up a Mid-East Feast this past weekend, and we're still dining on the leftovers: pearl couscous with garbanzo beans, Little Gems with almond-lemon dressing, lamb meatballs, and a roasted beet salsa with oranges and lemons. More deets in the AltText. 🍽️🍜
Ingredients for middle eastern couscous: clockwise from top left: golden raisins soaked in Madiera, garbanzo beans, dried blueberries soaked in brandy, baby red bell pepper slices, bowl of spices, toasted almonds, and uncooked turmeric pearl couscous. A lemon half is in the middle. A round white serving dish with a circular pattern of Little Gem lettuce leaves, topped with radish sprouts and radish chunks. I made an almond-lemon dressing to go on the salad. Turmeric couscous pearls with garbanzo beans on the left side of the serving dish, and a collection of lamb meatballs on the right. The dish has parsley sprinkled over the top. A bowl of roasted red beet salsa with chopped oranges and lemons, and seasoned with middle eastern spices. Mint and dill were combined with the beets.

I'll make sure this gets planted near the door to the White House Kitchen Garden: Pieris japonica.

If consumed, expect increased heart rate, ventricular tachycardia, arrhythmias in the cardiovascular system and an increased respiratory rate. Inhalation pneumonia is frequently the cause of death.

Sweet little toxic Ranunculus hispidus is a #NativePlant in the eastern United States. Contact with the plant causes burning, itching, rash & blisters due to the acrid poisonous juices which protect it plant from animals. Would be a shame if this infiltrated the White House lawn... #PoisonousPlants

Before baking: a round white dish containing a lasagna. The top has been covered with cheese and then decorated with a grape vine made with green olives and green beans. There are flowers made with red onion slices and baby bells with tomatoes. The baked lasagna has come out of the oven. The vegetables are cooked and the cheese is a golden brown. Tomato sauce spills from the edges of the baking dish.

A pork loin that has been cut in half, flattened, and covered with the parsley-kalamata mix on one side, and roasted red bells with capers on the other. This is then rolled up, wrapped in prosciutto, and baked. The baked pork loin has been sliced and placed on a clear glass plate with a gold rim. The parsley and red bell stuffing can be seen in the middle of the sliced pork.

Death Cap Mushrooms (Amanita phalloides) are widely available in North America and considered an invasive species - they are also extremely poisonous. The mushrooms can be found on lawns, in parks, along roadsides, and in the forest. Also on the White House lawn. ☠️ #PoisonousPlants #mushrooms

German Pfundstopf ("Dove") casserole. Somewhere I read that this dish was originally made with dove, but I can't find that source now. I made fresh ground sausage with lots of herbs, spices, fresh dill, cabbage, and topped with sliced tomatoes before baking. Garnish with fried shallots. 🍽️🍜
