An analysis by month over the last 25 years shows 🔥distribution across Australia's most flammable landscapes. Fire is not bad for the Australian environment, fire IS the environment. Fire is not good, nor bad, it is where we live. It is our responsibility to engage with it across our vast continent.

Dry lightning storms ripped through the Great Sandy, Gibson, and Tanami deserts a few days ago. Constrained by low fuel and previous burns, these desert fires are mostly small and really quite beautiful. Sentinel 2 imagery from Sunday.

However resilient country can be built, fuels at scale can be managed. Fund the tools to monitor fuels, fund the rangers on country. Watch these fires, especially their behavior related to previous burning, on the NAFI Moblie app.

750,000ha burnt across the NT over the last 5 days! This clip from yesterday - from the excellent Zoom Earth app. Mostly remote lightning strike fires. These fires can not be fought, these ignitions can't be controlled.

Kicking off wars is a bit of an obsession of the U. S. The new domestic focus will fit the MAGA ethos of keeping things a home. Might also make the rest of the world slightly less fearful of US aggression abroad...

100% ... Facism coming home. One thing to respect about this administration is a degree of honesty in their application of violence, no pretense. The delusion that bugs me is folks blaming Trump. He is simply symptomatic of a system that has long be a violent pesudo-democracy.

Acknowledging the Blitzortung and NAFI mobile apps for these data.

A shit-ton of lightning strikes through remote Tanami and Great Sandy deserts resulting in a similarly shit-ton of ignitions. Will be keeping a close eye on them over the coming days.

With potentially massive fires sparking up in the Central NT and WA deserts over the last few days I chucked this video together showing how to monitor their spread and asses their tradgectory using the North Australian Fire Information NAFI mobile app. Available on both Android and Apple

IPCC reports #renewables now 10 times more efficient than new #nuclear at #climate mitigation.
92.5% new power generation capacity added worldwide in 2024 was from renewables - with new nuclear nowhere.
New nuclear vastly over-cost and over-time.

I had great fun yapping away about fire and complexity with Rick Hind yesterday on ABC radio Darwin. 1:21 in . A long sprawling chat, kept thinking we were done before getting another question. www.abc.net.au/listen/progr...

On the Tiwi Islands this week, working with the Tiwi Junior Ranger program, delivering 3D tactile 🔥education models to Tiwi students. The models engage the kids - provide a platform for Tiwi to discuss their sophisticated work on country. The next generation thinking about fire and land management.

Oak‑savanna birds thrive after fire, a new study found.

Dozens of species preferred areas that burned in the 2018 Mendocino Complex Fire over unburned areas. So far, these ecosystems are proving resilient to increasingly severe wildfires, the authors concluded. 🧪🌿🌎

Absolutely massive fire racing through country S.E. of Broome at the moment. This (s2)image captured yesterday..visible are attempts to buffer burn ahead of the front. Latest data suggest it has jumped containment and is continuing to rip south-west. Follow it in real time on www.firenorth.org.au
