Mohammad Afif Naifeh dug thousands of graves between 2011/18, burying bodies which were brought to secret burial sites in refrigerator lorries.
He fled Syria and gave evidence which led to the prosecution of regime officials.

One-word labels don’t always capture today’s terrorism landscape. Evidence that more extremists are being driven by a mix of ideologies, rooted in reactionary and anti-liberal politics - or conspiracy theories and incel ideology. Many extremists are being classed as “mixed, unclear, or unstable”.

In the aftermath of an attack, there’s a rush to label suspects. With echoes of a 2016 Islamist attack at a Xmas market in Berlin, that same label was seized on last night. Journalists were accused of being too afraid to state the obvious, Twitter came to its own conclusion.

For weeks the authorities in Germany have been warning about the risk of Islamist attacks at Christmas markets. The suspect in last night’s attack appears to have been an anti-Islam activist who shared his support for AfD online.
