I wanted to clarify because the time period was relevant as the fear was (and still is) a shared experience for queer identities but the awareness of the unique experience that comes with each letter was not. It wasn't until I was with her that I could understand what she specifically faced.

There was a lot happening at once but won't forget the blanket of aggression not just from the men but from other patrons. That is the fear I wasn't fully aware of - even freedom presented difficulty for her in what was meant to be a safe space. It meant I went with her on first dates.

What I didn't realize was the complexity of the freedom as a person that was cis presenting in 1998. The bar catering for trans people she took me to presented a view. There was competition with other trans women and the men there were clear with me they weren't gay and some married on DL.

To clarify, I definitely knew she was scared - it's why I escorted her to the bathroom knowing policy protections by the company (Chase) didn't mean she wasn't susceptible to violence at work especially in the 90s. This was 5 years following Brandon Teena and the same year as Matthew Shepard.

I had to escort her to the bathroom - even though Chase had protections - it still wasn't safe. She introduced me to her world on my 21st birthday and realized the difficulty that comes with freedom. She was my person. And at this time she was going by she. Seamless to me.

I met her through friends but it was really because we worked together at Chase back in 1997. I referred to her as "she" and told she was a "he." It blew my mind as she always was a she to me. She helped me connect with my queerness.
