Like, the amount of human suffering caused by DWI is astonishing and horrible. But the state’s enforcement of traffic law is designed as a tool to enforce the prevailing social hierarchy. Also horrible.

I was a public defender in a state court system in a “border town” surrounded by a Native American Reservation. About 75% of my docket was DWI. From my perspective, you’re both right, and it makes it a supremely difficult issue.
