Social Unrest: The strain on resources & worsening living conditions fueled widespread unrest. Ceausescu doubled-down on surveillance & suppression of the population. This led to a full-on revolution & the downfall of Ceausescu's regime. He & his wife were publicly executed on Christmas Day, 1989.

Thousands of unwanted and motherless children were abandoned and placed in state-run orphanages. These institutions were overcrowded and underfunded, leading to severe neglect. No one alive at that time will forget the heartbreaking pictures and video leaked out of those pits of despair.
