Roman relief of a shop scene: two shop assistants, observed by a supervisor, pull a fine fabric out of a container and show it to a couple seated on a bench to the right of the panel. Above them, cushions and fabrics hang from a pole set beneath the tiled roof of the shop.

That magical moment when the pumice is gently cleared away revealing, for the first time in nearly 2000 years, a white mosaic.

Most of the image is of a white mosaic and the top part is small pumice stones

Today, the site of Tres Tabernae is an important archaeological area. Excavations have brought to light significant findings, which offer insights into the ancient settlement. Efforts are underway to further explore and preserve this historical site (currently not open to visitors).

The prosperity of Tres Tabernae waned as it was attacked and eventually razed to the ground by barbarians and later by Saracens in 868 CE. The inhabitants sought safety elsewhere, leading to the foundation of the nearby community of Cisterna.

The settlement became an episcopal see (seat of a bishop) in the early Christian era, but this function was later merged with the diocese of Velletri around the 9th century due to a decline in population. In the photos are the remains of the early Christian church unearthed here in 2024.

According to the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament, St. Paul was met by a group of Roman Christians at Tres Tabernae during his journey to Rome, an event that gave him courage and is often cited as a key moment in the early Christian history of the region.

Tres Tabernae is mentioned in historical and religious texts highlighting its importance. The Roman orator Cicero stayed there and referenced the location in letters he wrote to his friend Atticus in the years 61 and 59 BCE. Tres Tabernae is also present on the Tabula Peutingeriana.
