Today, the "underground city" is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and filmmakers call it Little Jerusalem. Mel Gibson filmed The Passion of the Christ here. Matera cannot be described, you have to be there 😀

Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. In the 1950s, due to extreme poverty (people lived with their farm animals in caves carved into the rock, with brick facades), the Italian government decided to forcibly relocate most of the population.

It was windy and cold, and snow fell in nearby Basilicata, leaving Matera a quiet and peaceful place. It's an incredible place, and I'll definitely be back.
