I am delighted to share our latest piece of research:

‘A global cross-cultural analysis of string figures reveals evidence of deep transmission and innovation’.

This was long in the works and is by far the largest project I’ve led to date.

I was just about to mention Elden Ring as a positive example. I could look at the skies and landscapes of that game forever. My partner hates action games but even she would sit next to me and just ogle at it. The other day she asked if the game had a "story only" mode so she could do a scenery run.

Pixel art games have aged timelessly. Even low poly PSX era games have a certain charm.

But the oily, plasticky look of current gen, which tries too hard to look real, I'm not so sure about. Time will tell.

Art direction was always the right choice over fidelity.

Asiallisestihan tiedepolitiikasta saa ja kuuluu keskustella. Itsellenikään ei ole itsestäänselvä, millä perustein rajalliset resurssit pitäisi allokoida. Joskus tulee huteja.

Siitä olen kuitenkin varma, että persumielisten ollessa vallassa olisi lukematon mullistava löydös jäänyt löytämättä.

Jälkeenpäin voin raportoida, että hyvin meni: hankkeen tuloksia uutisoitiin ympäri maailman ja julkaistiin mm. Science-lehdessä. Minusta kehitin kiinnostavia laskennallisia menetelmiä ihmistieteisiin.

Kun taas 2022 sain Akatemian tutkijatohtoripestin, omaakin tutkimushanketta leviteltiin "huuhaatutkimuksena" uusisuomiblogeissa. Tämä siis lähinnä sen takia, että otsikkoni oli leikittelevä. Eivät ne sen pidemmälle lukeneet. Ja miksi lukisivat kun intentio ei ole alkuunkaan tieteellinen.

Viime päivien "tiedepoliittisesta" keskustelusta pari omaa kokemusta.

Vuonna 2019, silloin vielä ympäristöalan väitöskirjatutkijana, alkoi tulla melkoisesti törkyä ja huru-ukkopalautetta henkilökohtaisiin viestintäkanaviin kun osallistuin maltillisesti ympäristöaktivismiin.

Very proud to share our new research on the OLDEST use of blue pigment! We identified traces of azurite - a vibrant blue mineral - on a stone object around 14-13,000 years old. Why is this so exciting? 👇🏺
