Given the recent devastation to US #entomology, this thread is a resource list for aspiring entomologists or those who’ve lost jobs. I invite others to add links they think might help. I won’t pretend this is easy, but there’s no better time to start. Open below to read: 🧪 #AcademicSky #science

When does the shiny newness of the Welsh coast wear off? Rhossili doesn’t seem like it ever will.

#nationaltrust
A dramatic coastal scene at Rhossili Bay in Wales. A narrow footpath made of wooden steps winds steeply up a grassy and bracken-covered hillside toward a small white cottage perched near the top. The path leads from the lower foreground all the way to the top left of the frame. The hillside drops off to reveal rugged sea cliffs in the distance, ending at a large sandy beach below. The tide is out, leaving smooth wet sand reflecting the overcast sky. Sunlight filters through large, dramatic clouds, casting both deep shadows and bright highlights across the landscape. The iconic shape of Worm’s Head, a tidal island, is just visible on the horizon where the cliffs meet the sea. The whole view feels windswept, open, and timeless.

Last admin box ticked. Entomology museum loans are home with their institutions. Royal Mail receipts filed. Settled in the UK and back to work.

Don't be that person that keeps a loan for two (or more) decades!

A bumblebee in Wales on a cool humid day. Much more cooperative here than in Washington DC where they are harder to approach for a close shot.

🌿
#ukwildlife #Invert #bugsky
Close up macro photograph of a bumblebee perched on a vivid pink and yellow flower. The bee is facing the camera directly, its large glossy black eyes and fuzzy body dusted with golden pollen grains. Its yellow band of hairs circles behind the head, contrasting against the darker black fur. The antennae stretch forward over the flower as the bee leans into the dense yellow center, surrounded by bright pink petals radiating outward. The background is blurred dark green foliage, which brings sharp focus to the intricate textures of the bee’s fine hairs, pollen grains, and the flower’s filaments. The image conveys both intimacy and scientific clarity, showing the bee’s role in pollination in striking detail.

A tightly closed zinnia? bud. I love the contrasts.
#bloomscrolling 🌿
A close-up macro photograph of a zinnia flower bud, centered tightly in the frame. The bud is round and encased in overlapping green bracts, each lined with a striking dark black edge that creates a geometric, almost scale-like pattern. The surrounding green sepals and leaves are slightly fuzzy and sharply detailed, adding texture and depth. The dark background isolates the bud beautifully, drawing focus to the contrast between the vivid green and the black outlines. The lighting is soft but directional, emphasizing the form and structure of the unopened flower.

Another hike on the Welsh coastline. Never been distracted by critters and landscapes so much 🌿
A wide coastal view of Three Cliffs Bay in Wales, showing dramatic rocky formations rising from the sea. In the foreground, grassy hills roll down toward the edge of the cliffs, with small winding footpaths cutting through the green slopes. Several tiny silhouettes of people stand on the ridge, giving scale to the sweeping landscape. The three pointed limestone cliffs jut out into the water, partially surrounded by foamy waves. The sea stretches out under a partly cloudy sky, with another headland visible in the hazy distance across the bay. The overall scene feels expansive and windswept, capturing the rugged beauty of the Welsh coastline.

On one of my first macro hikes I found this beautiful little slug under a log.

#Invert #macrophotography 🪲🪳🌿
A close-up macro photograph of a small, pale slug nestled into the bark of a decaying log. The slug is likely in the genus Deroceras. Its body is a creamy beige with subtle gray undertones and fine, wrinkled texture that runs along its mantle and back, giving it a ribbed appearance. The slug's head is facing downward, and its two short, translucent lower tentacles are clearly visible, extending slightly. Its skin appears moist, glistening slightly in the light. The surrounding environment is richly textured—dark, rough, and deeply pitted bark with reddish-brown tones dominates the frame. A small blade of grass or pine needle crosses the upper right side of the image, adding a contrast in both color and form. The lighting is low but directional, highlighting the slug’s moist surface and the intricate textures of both the slug and its decaying wood habitat. The composition draws attention to the slug's form and invites the viewer into the miniature, hidden world found beneath forest logs.

Lol "the Wales" meant the Gower AONB"
rosariolebronentomology.com
Oops. Didn't even notice that typo. I had originally written Gower AONB

First UK culture shock: I, a wee Puerto Rican hobbit, occasionally don’t set off enough “foreigner” vibes. Folks keep doing a double take before realizing my “American” accent.

My English accent is central Pennsylvanian for the record.

Kind of amazing that I can walk from my new home in the Wales to Gower AONB and sit on a beach with this view.
Wide landscape view of a rocky beach on the Gower coast in Wales. The foreground is crowded with dark jagged rock ledges coated in brown seaweed and slick with fresh spray. Shallow tide pools mirror the sky and thin ribbons of wet sand wind between the stones. A steep cliff rises on the left, gray and rust colored, with a skin of short grass along the rim. Pale mist lingers where the surf meets the rocks. The open sea fills the right half of the frame and glitters with hard white light. The sun sits behind a broken sheet of cloud near the upper right, sending soft rays and a bright silver path across the water. The sky is deep blue with scattered white cloud bands. No people, buildings, or boats are visible. The scene feels wild and quiet, captured near low tide from a low viewpoint close to the tide line.

A Hentzia sp jumping spider perched on the edge of a one pound coin. 🪲🪳 #Salticidae #Invert #bugsky 🌿
A close up macro photograph of a Hentzia jumping spider positioned at the edge of a British one pound coin. The spider is facing the camera directly, showing off its characteristic large forward facing eyes in a row across the front of its face. Its body is small and light brown with darker markings, while its front pair of legs are lifted and extended outward, appearing almost as if it is in a stance of curiosity or readiness. The coin beneath is sharply detailed, its gold colored ridged edge contrasting with the silvery patterned interior, which fills the background. The composition highlights both the intricate anatomy of the tiny spider and the striking size difference between it and the currency. The image is crisp and professional, drawing attention to the fine textures of the spider’s hairs, eyes, and the metallic coin surface.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

I wish I could say there was a plan but I was chosen by the University here.

Gower is on my list for the month with my macro equipment!

I've officially left the US and am now in the UK.

Very excited for the new adventure ahead.

Very lucky to be in Wales.

Look forward to meeting everyone in the entomology world I can out here.
A sunny view of terraced housing on a hillside in Swansea, Wales. In the foreground sits a white pavilion that reads Swansea Cricket & Football Club, with the crest on the front, and a blue sign below that reads Trade Centre Wales. A faded rooftop banner says Morgan La Roche. Behind the pavilion rise rows of three storey Victorian terraces. Many fronts are painted in strong blues beside grey stone. Bay windows and sash windows repeat along the street. Roofs are slate or tile with chimney stacks and small dormers, and several roofs carry solar panels. A leafy tree fills the lower left corner. The sky is bright with thin, wispy cloud, giving a calm summer feel.

A bee to brighten your day.

#entomology #Invert 🪲🪳 🌿
A detailed macro photograph of a solitary bee perched on a green plant stem. The bee may be a mason bee, with a compact, fuzzy golden-brown body and large, glossy black eyes. Its translucent wings are veined and neatly folded along its back. The bee's mandibles are engaged with the stem, which appears to be slightly damaged or chewed. Fine hairs cover its body and legs, catching the light and revealing texture often invisible to the naked eye. The stem is vibrant green with vertical ridges, and the entire scene is set against a softly blurred, dark green background that enhances the subject’s details. The image is sharply focused on the bee’s head and thorax, offering a striking view of its features and behavior in a quiet moment of foraging

Niagara Falls from the Canadian side. Beautiful view. 🌿
A wide, view of Niagara Falls taken from the Canadian side. The immense curtain of water spills in a horseshoe shape from a high ledge, crashing into the churning turquoise water below. Dense mist rises from the base of the falls, partially obscuring the far end of the cascade and blending into the cloudy sky. The lighting is dynamic, with dark, dramatic clouds to the right and a patch of deep blue sky breaking through to the left. Sunlight highlights the swirling foam and eddies in the river below. In the foreground, dark wet rocks and a small patch of foamy water (clay contamination) edge the scene, adding depth and contrast.

Hiding out in Canada for a bit before heading to the UK. Thanks to my Canadian friends, I wish I could've visited sooner and under better circumstances. This is an amazing country, and Toronto is a great city.
A dramatic, richly saturated photo of Toronto’s skyline taken from across the water. The CN Tower rises prominently in the center-right of the image, surrounded by clusters of modern high-rise buildings. Dark, heavy clouds loom overhead, tinged with warm highlights from the setting sun, creating a striking contrast against a vibrant blue sky. Boats and sailboats dot the calm water in the foreground, adding motion and scale to the still cityscape.

Very glad to see Wired covering this. They did a solid ask-around with the #entomology community too. 🧪

I don't think people realize how big this problem has gotten and this is the most thorough examination of I've seen outside of the literature.
