Such wonderful work Deborah, capturing the unpredictable beauty of an imperfect world. I started to read your blog and kept on reading all the way back beyond 2020 - what a journey you have been on. My very best wishes as always and keep up your fabulously unique photography xx

3/3 In 1891 Jane's nephew and niece, Henry and Mary Wheeler were staying with her - by 1901 both documented as photographers. Henry became an acclaimed photographer at the Halksworth Wheeler photographic studio in Folkestone, and Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

2/3 Jane Halksworth was recorded as a professional photographer in the 1860 Post Office Directory, possibly tutored by photographic artist James Tulley while resident at 58 Fleet Street in 1856. She married Lancelot Williams and in 1891 a new photographic connnection started.

Returning to former posts, this week features early English photographer Miss Jane Halksworth and the origins of a photographic dynasty. In 1857 she advertised her portrait service from the family home in Shepherds Bush and also from her father's watchmaking premises at 58 Fleet Street, London. 1/3

Over on our blog, Digital Resources Manager Louisiane Ferlier takes a look at the history of women in the Royal Society library and finds they undoubtedly worked and studied there long before they became eligible for election to the Fellowship in 1945: royalsociety.org/blog/2025/04...

2/2 Capitalising on her photographic mobility, she offered portraiture for 'Invalids and ladies attended in their own homes'. Mrs Atkinson promoted and demonstrated equal status for a woman in professional photography by highlighting her gender in the 1860 advertisement.

Continuing the focus on Mrs Atkinson, travelling photographer in 1860, by August she reached Northallerton in North Yorkshire. The Stockton Herald advertised 'Atkinson’s Photographic Van' centrally located near the church, offering large & small portraits 'taken by a Female'. 1/2

2/2 Mrs Atkinson stayed 'in Mr Stephenson's field, behind the Unicorn Inn' in Richmond. She brought the new technology of photography to the local residents who may not have seen a photograph before, presenting women as a commercial equal at a time of gender based social inequality.

This week introduces one of the least visible of all early British women photographers but possibly one of the most significant. Mrs Atkinson was an itinerant photographer travelling with her 'Photographic Van' in her 1860 Richmond and Ripon Chronicle advertisement. 1/2
