Gandhi's varna wasn't anti hierarchical it was paternalistic hierarchy. The structure remained; he just wanted it "benevolent." That's not heterodoxy, that's reformism defending the status quo with nicer language.

Gandhi opposed caste but supported varnashrama dharma (the four-fold division of society), believing they were different. In reality, caste and varna are the same the Manusmriti's varna system is the scriptural basis for caste hierarchy.
