It was terrific: funny, moving, informative, powerful. Brilliantly written and acted. Opening of second half hilarious!

I lived in Nottingham for a few years in the 1990s. Yesterday I went back for the first time in decades. Enjoyed calling in @fiveleavesbooks.bsky.social, Nottingham’s indie radical bookshop. Many moons ago it was Mushroom Bookshop. Here’s to @rossbradshaw.bsky.social for keeping such places going.

Final night of “The Last Stand of Mary Whitehouse” by @carolinebirduk.bsky.social . I doubt there’s any tickets left but it’s a fantastic play. Maxine Peake and Samuel Barnett are superb. Let’s hope there will be another run.

RIP Tony Harrison. When I arrived at the UofWolv I taught a course called “Literary Representations of the Family” focussed on later C20 lit. Tony Harrison’s poetry featured and introduced me to his work. ‘Book Ends’ I and II are sonnets and a half. Consummate use of form.

The problem with many university strategies is that they’re completely divorced from reality. Launched with fanfare, press releases and high quality videos, the people of the university mostly roll their eyes because there is no acknowledgement of the problems that need to be solved. 1/

Christianity that is full of welcome, healing and celebration. Found in the fields and on the dancefloor and in the mosh pit.

Our 2025 festival photos are now live — more than 6,000 images (with a few still being added) – dig in here: buff.ly/XsFDRK4
Three children play with drums on a grass field in front of a grand house. They raise the drumsticks up to imitate bunny ears Acrobatic performers wearing colourful outfits jump and make striking shapes from stage while a crowd watches them A woman wearing glasses raises her hand in the air and closes her eyes

A story about the hijacking of religion by white nationalists, who use its shared cultural heritage to ‘other’ people who don’t look like them.

The pictures here though – our pictures – tell a different story. A truer one, we would say. Of a faith that is joy-filled, inclusive and justice-seeking.
A woman in a vibrant rover stands in front of a sign with red raised fists on. A festival stage with red lights illuminated a performer. A pair of red hands are raised above the stage. A man carries a child in a cap on his shoulders during a busy festival atmosphere

Every picture tells a story. For example, you might have seen pictures from last weekend’s march in London. They tell a story about – amongst other things – the far-right’s recent co-opting of a version of Christianity.
An elderly lady - who is leading communion at a festival - lift the communion cup into the air Two people hold hands. Their arms and hands are covered in tattoos. A lighthouse with a geometric pattern and shining light, amongst a festival crowd.

Here's a parody adaptation of the classic song "Walking in Memphis" by the soulful Marc Cohn, in which we address Donald Trump's arrival in the UK for his exciting historic second state visit.

It's called "Put Up Some Fences" 🎹🎶

"Pat, why do you carry that ridiculous 600mm lens on long hikes?"

Buddy, I can see mountains reflected in the eyes of a trailside pika.
A pika sits on a mossy rock. Tighter crop of the same pika, focusing on its head. An even tighter crop, focusing more on the pika's eye. An extremely tight crop of the pika's eye, emphasizing their reflection of an early morning mountain scene.
