Having served on an advisory committee, I think this is utterly stupid. ww2.aip.org/.../agencies.... The idea that the government wouldn't want advice from teams of experts in terms of making decisions is completely bizarre. The cost is pretty minimal - I wasn't paid additional money, for example.

It's hard for me to believe that anyone would want this. What is happening to basic science is a problem, which we will feel later. However, I would imagine that everyone knows that rogue nuclear weapons, or the decay of our own nuclear weapons is problematic.
