It’s a strange time to be an opera fan. Stunningly beautiful voices come from everywhere: Korea, Africa, Mexico, Poland; yet productions are distressingly abysmal. Directors fancy themselves the true artists, with great opera merely the canvas on which they daub their strokes of genius.
