Embracing AI and developing our team can go hand in hand. If you prefer not to use AI and want to practice in your own way, that's absolutely your choice in a free market. The great thing is that we can practice however we like. If someone wants to use paper records, that's perfectly fine!

The company I work for offers some of the best pay in the industry, provides unlimited opportunities for continuing education, and fully utilizes our nursing staff according to the full scope of their licenses. We deeply value their contributions and support their career growth.

I don't believe we are in disagreement on this matter. I assert that AI will help reduce our workload, allowing our staff more time to focus on patient care and communicate with guardians for more meaningful conversations.

I also agree that burnout and staff shortages are significant issues.

The goal isn’t replacing people—it’s reducing burnout and improving outcomes. We get to choose how we use AI, and I believe clinicians should be part of shaping its role, not sidelined by it.

I totally get the skepticism—there is a lot of marketing noise out there. But I don’t think this movement is just hype to make developers rich. Some of the best AI tools are being developed by veterinarians, or in collaboration with them, to solve real workflow pain points.

The key is narrow, well-defined use cases, not general intelligence. And in those areas, AI can be a valuable second set of eyes—especially in emergency or understaffed settings.

That’s also fair. The answer depends on which AI and what task. Generative AI has its flaws (like the infamous finger problem in images), but diagnostic models trained on massive datasets—like those for radiology or pathology—are already showing consistent accuracy improvements over human averages.

I’d never advocate for fully automating the front desk. But imagine a system that helps a receptionist manage callbacks or flags urgent messages faster—that’s the kind of AI I believe we should be working toward.
