I actually am fascinated by the implications of the way the various shows over the years have portrayed privacy and surveillance in the federation. There's all this incredibly invasive stuff but also so much stuff they don't do. Like, they don't have video surveillance in the halls...

Yeah, I had an economics professor who liked to say that we can't really understand capitalism until we understand that 80% of what corporations do is light money on fire and then throw it over a cliff. It's the 20% that isn't wasted that fuels the whole system.
