Day has run that have roll corner-post (and variations) since he arrived at OSU. Very popular Shanahan influence

OSU put Tate and Smith to the same side. UM went C2 to that side, C4 opposite. C2 Safety shaded to Smith.

OSU really starting to go after the LB level, both in pass and in misdirection. They just do not execute early assignments well or recognize structures of route stems to help DBs behind them in coverage or actually position themselves to at least flash color to the QB

Zig zag motion into stack from the slot. LB didn’t have good leverage on the point man, can’t let him push vertical there and form that rub. But the motion makes it difficult as they are thinking quick route to the flat with the initial motion and not communicating

Thanks Wink. Appreciate the single coverage.

@colintj.bsky.social have to assume that was Zeus on INT? C2 on Smith, C4 to field. Field side was where Sayin needed to go with football.

Interesting wrinkle this year is OSU has tended to have a true outside monster and then a guy they lined up in the slot.

This year it’s 2 true outside guys. So if we play C2 to Smith to the field, it’ll be Quarters away to Tate.

Will Sayin be able to process that and get the ball to the 1v1?

@rossrfulton.bsky.social has said this elsewhere, but OSU’s become more and more of a Penny front (5-1 Nickel) team and that makes inside zone really tough to execute.

Michigan has run more and more IZ to complement their OZ and moved away from their multiple gap stuff as the season has gone on.
Good example of block destruction from OSU DL

The Pen is back.
Bit rusty… Ohio State vs PSU, 2025

PSU runs truck. Doesn’t execute it well but OSU DT baited off tendency, which allows an explosive

Wink has blitzed on 3 of the first 23 plays. WAY less than usual.

Also playing some Zeus on Boston. When Boston lines up at 1 to the field, they play C2 to the field, if he's 2 then Quarters. Play Quarters away from Boston.

Simplifying a LOT but still a major wrinkle for this opponent.

Here’s a good example of our guys not being given answers in their calls.

This is 3-4 vs 12 on 1st down after the 3rd and 1 that SC got into 12 for, tho I think they could’ve subbed. It’s a 4-deep 2-under fire zone.

Bad enough I gotta watch Barham on this play. Only to also have to watch whatever the hell Hillman is doing. Not to mention the PSLB completely lose situational awareness.

Can’t run C1, not because of physical talent, but because we don’t know the scheme…

This is me dying inside

UIUC went to a ton of C3 vs SC and it largely worked to keep Maiava from feeling comfortable reading it out. But OSU’s O is just built from the ground up to beat C3 in the air—they looove curl/flat. Sayin not struggling at all to see what’s there rn.

Would help if they at least started in 2-high.

They can’t fit gap and they don’t know how to play Tampa and they played 3-4 vs 12, things we’ve been complaining about since OU.

Co-sign all of this.
OSU has a bit of an explosives problem. Partly play calling. Bert is gonna play a ton of 1-high that’s what he does. Sayin has shown he can rip that up and Day just doesn’t care. They’re gonna get their reps in running gap without numbers.

It’s kinda sandbagging but also Sayin needs the reps? I dk.

OSU running a backside glance RPO v Minn’s Invert Tampa. Per @spacecoyote.bsky.social, believe that Sayin is reading grass to see the opening for the glance.

Charted the first half and I don’t think Wink really let up much or changed really. Blitzed ~2/3 of the time. Barham did some dumb stuff early, Wink had some especially exotic versions of his blitzes, UW threw some quick game, and Zeke biffed a tackle.

@colintj.bsky.social Wink just can’t help himself with C0 on third and long, can he?

Dana not big into mixing in some 7 man full slide protection, eh?

There’s some interesting punch-counter punch stuff happening in the CMU game I think. Like I said Venables brought a ton of corner pressures especially HOT. Example:

Palms (regular rules) to any 2-removed.

There is no 3-Drop, so you don't account for the RB.

2 underneath players are wall builders & have to take underneath routes back.

CB is playing Squat, which means they sink regardless of a flat presence.

Ball brings you down.

Really cool design behind this Fire Zone.

Drop the down weak safety to deep center where he can keep his eyes on any vertical coming from opposite

Thoughts on Michigan:
Overall, very happy with the O scheme. Would like a little more heavy formations, a little less 4-wide, but overall I think it’s close to what I was looking for. Run game diversity from Moore, PAP, roll outs, take advantage of some free yards and get easy looks for QB
