Nailed it. Politicians have relied on fear as far back as I can remember. Nixon used "welfare queens" and fear of black crime to drive voters to the polls; Trump is just the latest iteration, using "illegal" immigrants (really, melanin) to scapegoat.

Well, he's a 'unifier' in the sense that he's provided the country's racists with a platform that other presidents avoided.

While the Founders were definitely 'forward thinking' individuals, I don't think they imagined that an entire political party could be subverted to the will of an individual. They made the mistake of believing that people are reasonable. They aren't.
