I've always preferred having a Full midsection in frame over having feet but so many artists actually cut off so much ample curve.

You've done what you can. Simply stand with your Hubby and tell them you've spent what you could to help them over a rough patch in their life but your efforts didn't help them see any real improvements or change in their habits. And since they won't grow wiser & healthier, you're moving on.
