Went to the Art Institute recently (after like 5 years of living in Chicago lmao) and WOW no wonder this museum has international acclaim! It was absolutely spectacular and I barely had time to scratch the surface!
A candid photo of me lost in delighted contemplation of a painting off camera. Cow Skull with Calico Roses by Georgia O'Keefe. As the name suggests, the painting features a cow skull in the center. The level of detail on the painting is exquisite. There are two pure white roses with white stems and leaves. One is placed at the tip of where the nose would be, and the other is placed at the base of the skull's left horn, as though it were a flower placed in a maiden's hair. The background appears to be several layers of paper with an off white hue and a black line runs down the center behind the skull. Two photos of Frida Kahlo are framed on either side of an ornate golden fabric sleeve, which originally held the photos when Frida had given them to the artist Walter Pach. The fabric sleeve has beautiful red and blue flowers surrounding a cross. Nighthawks by Edward Hopper. In this renowned painting, a non-specific diner with large windows on a New York street corner is depicted in exquisite detail, late at night. The diner is open and has 3 patrons. One man sits alone opposite a pair of people (one man and one woman) who are ostensibly a couple. The men wear suits and the woman with red hair wears a red dress. Behind the oddly triangular counter is a longsuffering employee, bent over perhaps to wash a glass or stock the cabinets. The patrons have glum, exhausted looks on their faces, except for the lone patron who is facing away from the viewer. The use of lighting shows the inside of the diner as a bright and warm space, with yellow interior walls contrasting sharply with the barren empty streets outside. Only the light from the diner cuts through the dark of night, bathing the sidewalk immediately around it in artificial light.

Reading poetry in the park is the perfect way to spend an afternoon 🥰💖 Deirdre's Farewell to Alba is one of my all time favorite poems
An introduction gives historical context to the poem that follows. This page has the first part of the poem entitled: "Deirdre's Farewell to Alba" which reads as follows. "Farewell to fair Alba, high house of the sun, Farewell to the mountain, the cliff, and the dun; Dun Sweeny, adieu! for my love cannot stay, And tarry I may not when love cries away. Glen Vashan! Went to check on my favorite dune plants wondering if any signs of spring were beginning to peek through. No signs of spring but they've all done a great job of dispersing their seeds and feeding the local wildlife 💖 proud of them 🥰
Little Bluestem stands proudly on the side of a dune path. Its dormant for the winter, and all of its seeds have been dispersed. The seedhead of a wild oat held in my hand. All of its seeds are gone as well and its a pale tan color A stand of marram grass on the side of a dune trail. The seed pod of a wild indigo, split in half and empty, the seeds being long gone at this point.

I love and hate how some of my all time favorite drawings are just random doodles in my little notebook lol
