Shocking update from our Curator! 😱

Queen Anne accidentally shot and killed Jowler whilst hunting. 😭
roystonmuseum.bsky.social
It's #WorldAnimalDay.

Jowler was King James VI & I's favourite hunting dog and a constant presence at his court in Royston.

However, one day in December 1604 he went missing! (Jowler, not James)

Our Playtime! school workshop looks at toys through history and the kids are always amazed at how some toys they recognise and play with today, have been played with for hundreds of years!

Needless to say, James didn't listen, and continued to visit the town every year until just a month before his death 400 years ago.

It turns out the town's residents had in fact stolen Jowler in a daring attempt to get the Kings attention!

They returned him the next day, with a note around his neck pleading that the King returned to London.

Note reading: Good Mr. Jowler, we pray you speak with the King (for he hears you everyday, and so doth he not us) that it will please his Majesty to go back to London, for else the country will be undone; all our provision is spent already, and we are not able to entertain him any longer.

The Marquess of Winchester's Regiment has arrived at the Museum!
James VI&I died 400 years ago & was succeeded by his son Charles I whose disagreements with Parliament were the cause of the English Civil War.

You can meet the Civil War re-enactors across Royston today as part of the Arts Festival.

3 questions:

1) Where do we buy tickets?
2) Will this be online or in person?
3) Will there be biscuit tasters available?

'Ponies and Holidays' was the 2nd book in Gervaise's series about Georgia, and also the 2nd illustrated by Whydale.

In the story Patience becomes friends with Georgia and Susan, and goes home with them for the holidays. But Patience starts acting very oddly when Georgia’s cat disappears.

Animals is today's #OnlineArtExchange theme, which makes it the perfect time to share the latest addition to our art collection!

This is a gouache illustration by E.H. Whydale (we may have mentioned him once or twice) from 'Ponies and Holidays' by Mary Gervaise, published in 1950.
